Three Recognized at BOC Meeting for African American History Month
In honor of African American History Month, at last night's meeting the Board of Commissioners recognized individuals who continue to serve the greater good for our community. A brief description of achievements were shared as each honoree was announced. Commissioners presented the honorees with photos of our beautiful historic courthouse captured by Ryan Smith. Thank you to each of you for your involvement and love for our community! ❤️
The following were nominated by citizens and selected by the Board to receive this recognition:
Ciara McKnight
Nominated by Todd Wofford
Ciara works daily with after school teen care for young ladies in a underserved portion of Rome/Floyd County out of the Fielder Center. This program provides mentorship and counseling to over 25 ladies daily. Ciara has also been instrumental in assisting with the community at the Fielder Center by providing all children a safe place to play in the gym during the evenings. Several events are scheduled for 2024 along with a fun filled summer camp. Ciara continues to find new ways to serve the Rome Community.
Marquita + Phillip Davis
Nominated by Sara Dahlice Malone
Marquita is Co-Founder & Director of new mentorship program at Main Elementary School. Director of a tutorial group that provides tutoring and mentoring for students attending Main Elementary, Anna K. Davie Elementary, Rome Middle and Rome High School for students residing in the South Rome area. Rome Floyd Youth NAACP Executive Officer. South Rome Community Association, One Community United and other outreach programs not limited to just youth. Mrs. Davis and her husband are a team working closely with each other assisting citizens of Rome & Floyd Co. I believe that one of their greatest passions is our Youth.
Ralph Davis
Nominated by Jake Hager
Mr. Ralph Davis is a humble and steadfast advocate for the South Rome Community. Ralph has served as the chair of South Rome Redevelopment Corporation, (now South Rome Alliance) during which the South Rome Early Learning Center was created. He has overseen operations of the South Rome Community Garden for over ten years and has recently secured grant funding for garden renovations and expansion. Ralph is at the South Rome Community Garden and Community Center daily, helping to care for the property and overseeing routine maintenance. Ralph is the type of guy you can always depend on. He wants to be in the background and doesn't like all the attention, (but he is very deserving of recognition). I would like to respectfully nominate Mr. Ralph Davis for this recognition of African American History of Floyd County.
"Ralph is a loyal advocate for the South Rome Community and works tirelessly to make our community a better place". - Jennifer Scott
"Ralph can always be counted on to lend a helping hand". - Jake Hager
